Inspired by the recent achievements of independents in Federal Parliament Voices of Moncrieff is now searching for a Gold Coaster to go in to bat for the people of Moncrieff in Canberra.
In December 2023, we initiated a listening project to identify and understand the priority issues for the people of our federal electorate. More than 400 people shared their views through Kitchen Table Conversations, Listening Posts and an Online Survey.
The feedback was collated in a Community Listening Report which was launched at a packed Six Tricks Distilling Co on Wednesday 4 September. Attendees heard that Moncrieff constituents want more action on the challenges of five important Gold Coast issues:
- Transport
- Housing and homelessness
- Cost of living
- Crime, including violence against women
- Climate change & energy policy
Also, a large majority of participants (71%) said they were not being well-represented in Canberra, citing a lack of action on local priorities and a lack of trust and confidence in national decision-making. A high level of disengagement was reported because of an apparent inability to evolve outcomes specifically appropriate for the Gold Coast.
As a result, Voices of Moncrieff has launched a search for an independent candidate to give voice to the priorities of our community and facilitate more supportive decisions for our rapidly growing city.
We believe politics can be done differently when powered from the community grassroots alongside the two-party system.
We are excited to embark on the search for an independent candidate who can speak to our community’s concerns on Federal issues.
